My Favourite Pubs in Ireland – A Local Guide’s Recommendations by Paul from Setanta Chauffeur Tours
There are few better ways to experience the true spirit of Ireland than by spending time in one of our traditional pubs. As a private chauffeur and driver guide with Setanta Chauffeur Tours, I’ve had the privilege of showing visitors from around the world the very best of Ireland. While the stunning scenery, castles and coastline always impress, it’s often the warm welcome in an Irish pub that guests remember most.
People regularly ask me, “Where would you go for a real Irish pub experience?” These are some of the places I genuinely enjoy recommending. Each has its own unique character, friendly locals and a story worth discovering.
Sean’s Bar, Athlone

Recognised as Ireland’s oldest pub, Sean’s Bar has been welcoming travellers for over 1,000 years. Walking through its doors is like stepping back in time. Enjoy a perfectly poured pint of Guinness, soak up the history and, if you’re lucky, listen to a traditional Irish music session that makes the experience even more memorable.
The Brazen Head, Dublin

When touring Dublin, I always recommend a visit to The Brazen Head. Full of history and charm, it’s one of the city’s best-known pubs and offers fantastic Irish food, live music and a warm atmosphere that captures the character of Ireland’s capital.
Pints of Guinness your only man 💚

Westport is one of Ireland’s most beautiful towns, and Matt Molloy’s is one of its greatest attractions. Owned by legendary musician Matt Molloy, this pub is famous for outstanding traditional Irish music. If you want to experience authentic Irish culture, this is a wonderful place to spend an evening.

The Village of Doolin,
Home to Gus o Connors pub
After visiting the spectacular Cliffs of Moher, I love bringing guests to Doolin. Gus O’Connor’s offers delicious food, excellent seafood, lively music sessions and one of the friendliest atmospheres you’ll find anywhere along the Wild Atlantic Way.
Dick Mack’s, Dingle

Dingle is one of my favourite towns in Ireland, and Dick Mack’s is always worth a visit. Full of character, this famous pub is the perfect place to enjoy local craft beer, Irish whiskey and great conversation while experiencing the unique charm of County Kerry.
O’Loclainn’s Irish Whiskey Bar, Ballyvaughan

For anyone who enjoys Irish whiskey, O’Loclainn’s is a hidden treasure. Located in beautiful County Clare, it offers one of the finest selections of Irish whiskey in the country and is an excellent stop while exploring the Burren.
John Kavanagh’s (The Gravediggers), Dublin

Away from the busy tourist streets, The Gravediggers remains one of Dublin’s most authentic traditional pubs. Famous for its outstanding Guinness and relaxed atmosphere, it’s a place where visitors can enjoy a genuine local experience.
The Tally Ho Bar, Longford

No list of my favourite Irish pubs would be complete without including The Tally Ho Bar in Longford.
Dating back to 1875, The Tally Ho is one of those traditional Irish pubs where you’ll always receive a genuine Irish welcome. Whether you’re enjoying a perfectly poured pint of Guinness, chatting with the friendly locals or listening to live traditional music, it perfectly captures the warmth and hospitality that visitors travel to Ireland to experience.
As someone who regularly tours Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, I always enjoy introducing guests to places like The Tally Ho. It’s authentic, welcoming and a wonderful reminder that some of Ireland’s greatest experiences are found off the beaten track.

Some of the best memories aren’t found in guidebooks. They’re made while chatting with locals, listening to an impromptu music session, discovering a hidden pub or simply enjoying the incredible scenery along the journey.
I’d love to welcome you to Ireland and share these experiences with you.
